Kill the West in me lets worlds collide and merge. Gamelan ensemble Gending and the Doelenkwartet stand side by side in music by Boudewijn Tarenskeen and Jonás Bisquert, two composers with a fascination for Indonesian culture and history. They wrote their music to seditious letters by the Javanese princess Raden Adjeng Kartini (1879-1904), who died during childbirth, and razor-sharp texts by the very-much-alive Indonesian writer Ayu Utami (1968). Their texts breathe fiery resistance against the established order and the subordinate role of women. In the performance, Kartini and the Javanese maid Katini confront each other. The friction between these two women, between two composers, and two ensembles from two very different traditions are a source of discord, but also form an opportunity to come to an agreement. Between the two personalities and in music.
